How to Cruise / What to Expect

Embarkation Day: Getting Onboard

How does arrival work?

Think of the cruise terminal like an airport, but friendlier. When you arrive at the port, you will drop your large bags with the porters at the curb (bring a few singles for tips!). You will keep your small carry-on bag with you.

  • Tip: Keep your passport, medications, and any valuables in your carry-on. You won't see your checked bags for a few hours.

The Check-In Process

You will go through security (similar to an airport metal detector) and then check in at the cruise line counter. They will check your passport and take your photo.

  • The Key Card: You will receive a cruise card (often called a SeaPass or Sail & Sign card). This is your room key, your credit card, and your ID for getting on and off the ship. Do not lose it!

When do I get my room?

You can usually board the ship around 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, but your cabin might not be ready until 1:30 PM or 2:00 PM. We recommend heading straight to the buffet for lunch or exploring the ship decks until the "Cabins Ready" announcement is made.

What is the "Muster Drill"?

Safety first. Before the ship sails, everyone must participate in a mandatory safety drill (Muster Drill). You will be directed to your "Muster Station" (printed on your key card) to learn where to go in an emergency. It takes about 5 minutes, and yes, you have to go—they take attendance!

Luggage & Logistics

What happens to my suitcase?

After you drop it at the curb, the ship’s crew will load it onto the vessel and deliver it directly to your cabin door. It usually arrives between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM.

  • First-Timer Mistake: Packing a swimsuit or dinner clothes in the checked bag and then not having them when the pool is open or dinner starts. Keep a change of clothes in your backpack!

Debarkation: Getting Off

On the last night of the cruise, you will pack your bags and leave them outside your cabin door before midnight. The crew will pick them up while you sleep.

  • On departure morning, you will leave the ship, go through customs, and find your luggage waiting for you in the terminal, organized by color-coded tags.

  • When booking your accompanying travel keep in mind that ship arrival times are not guaranteed and it is advised to not book morning flights home

Life Onboard

How do I pay for things?

Cruises are a "cashless society." Everything from drinks to gift shop souvenirs is charged to your room using your Key Card. You will settle the bill at the end of the trip using the credit card you have on file.

  • Depending on the cruise there may be additional packages available for purchase such as Premium Extra Package

  • Note: The Poker Room is the exception! We use cash (or chips bought with cash) for play.

Common "Rookie" Questions

Will I get seasick?

Modern cruise ships are massive and equipped with stabilizers that minimize motion. Most people feel very little movement. However, if you are sensitive, we recommend packing Dramamine or Sea-Bands just in case. The lower decks and mid-ship cabins are the most stable.

Can I use my cell phone?

Be careful! Once the ship leaves port, your phone may connect to "Cellular at Sea," which has very expensive roaming rates.

  • Pro Tip: Put your phone in Airplane Mode as soon as the ship starts moving. Turn on Wi-Fi to use the ship’s internet packages or to message other passengers using the Cruise Line’s app.

What if I forget something?

The ship has shops that sell toiletries, sunscreen, and clothing, but they can be pricey. It is best to double-check your packing list for essentials like prescriptions and phone chargers.
